As its name would suggest, the township of Coalcliff was originally founded to exploit the area’s abundant and valuable coal resources, whose seams are still visible in the escarpment cliffs. Through the coal mining and coal coking industries have since departed, the small hamlet of Coalcliff remains deeply proud of this blue-collar heritage.
For many decades, Coalcliff SLSC has provided a caring and family friendly atmosphere, where the emphasis is on promoting surf-skills and an enjoyment of the ocean, rather than rigorous competition. This laid-back attitude has played a major part in drawing new members and nippers to the club from an area that far exceeds the boundaries of Coalcliff itself.
From this strong base, the club has expanded its actives to include regular musical fundraising events, as well as the annual Triple-Crown series. These events, which include The Beach to Bombie Swim, The Rod Stevens Memorial Paddle, The Bridge to Boatshed Run and the Coalcliff Black Ironperson, have each become highlights in the Coalcliff SLSC calendar. The strength, stability and welcoming attitude of our club have helped position Coalcliff SLSC as a major focus of the small but gentrifying community of Coalcliff. Please come by our beautiful beach and say hello, you’ll always find a friendly face.
